I’m surprised the fee wasn’t proposed to pay bad drivers for not breaking traffic laws.

  • MoxieLouise1

Listen, you greedy bastages…my daughter’s insurance co-pay is $6000 annually. The low gas prices help a little, but oh, no…we can’t have that.

    • Tessa from Texas

It has also been kind of nice to be able to spend more at the grocery store, too. Now grocery prices will start rising again and we will have less to spend. But I guess when all that green energy magically appears, groceries can be shipped for pennies.

Hey oil companies! I have a GREAT idea…now, follow me on this…how’s about YOU pay a NEW tax, say…$10/barrel, so that I can fund bloated, inefficient green transportation projects that will eventually put you out of business! Whaddya say? You in?

Douchebag doesn’t even begin to describe the current POTUS.

Right. Just like $15 minimum wage would only affect CEOs.

    • Bill Corish – Linden, VA

That’s correct. As an employer, I can assure you that we all dig into our own pockets to cover all such government mandated expenses associated with running our businesses; our portions of the social security and medicare taxes, unemployment taxes, workmen’s compensation insurance, the pending health insurance mandate, etc. This new oil fee will be no different.

      We’re givers like that.

Tax Accounting 101 – any tax or fee levied on the seller is ultimately borne by the consumer in the form of a price hike.

Love how they conveniently ignore this fact and try to convince the voters that the oil companies will pay this out of the goodness of their hearts.

    • bil_g

      That’s why he’s calling it a fee.

      Social Justice points achieved.

      • Lizzyp

Any tax or fee levied on the seller. ALL costs are passed through to the buyer. It doesn’t matter if you call it a tax, a fee or a ‘shared responsibility payment.’

        • bil_g

Obvious to anyone with a functional brain.

But that’s not who he’s talking to, is it?

          • Lizzyp

I had the most frustrating conversation with someone not too long ago. He thought it was ‘awesome!’ that Joe’s Crab Shack was going to start paying their servers $14.00 per hour. He said it was just wrong that employees – real, W-2 employees, weren’t making the federal minimum wage. When I pointed out to him that, if they aren’t making the equivalent of minimum wage when their hourly rate is combined with tips, then the company has to make up the difference (Tip Credit) and even showed him the page from the Labor Dept website, his response was ‘that’s too hard! They should just have to pay them!’ Then I explained about profit margins, labor cost as a percentage of sales, calculated roughly how much their labor cost would go up and asked how he thought they’d recover that, he just kept coming back to the ‘moral’ argument. Then I explained that no server I know who is any good wants to limit themselves to making $14 per hour, because it’s a pay cut, and that there were 3 resorts within 2 miles of where we were sitting. One of them pays their servers a set rate, no tips. The other 2 pay the lower rate for tipped employees and they get tipped. Guess which one servers are dying to get out of?

I think everyone entering government should be required to take a basic economics class.

          • bil_g

At a minimum, Lizzy. Maybe, also, suffer through the consequences of their “morality”.

          • Lizzyp

You mean like how Wal-Mart caved and bumped up wages, and now they’re closing stores? Or like the professor in CA who was so excited about the minimum wage being increased, and then realized that he only had enough money in his grant to pay for 2 student researchers, where he used to be able to hire 3? Yeah, the problem is clearly that he needs to increase his grant request, I suppose.

These children demand an increase in their allowance, without being willing to work any harder for it, then cry foul when the golden goose dies.

I understand their inclination to want the world to be more kind and warm and fuzzy. I think we all would. But I’m really tired of being accused of being heartless because I’d like to see us as a nation be better stewards of our money. Make better choices. Set expectations. See people earning their way. And see people being rewarded for hard work

lizzyp’s first rule of economics: There is no greater motivator for a person than the promise of reward. (It’s borrowed, but I don’t know who said it first)

          • bil_g

After weeks of procrastination and malaise, I got off my ass and cut wood with my neighbor. On top of the endorphin rush and sense of self-satisfaction, I had 5 days of the best(and cheapest) heat through 3ft of snow.

            IOW, I agree.

          • Lizzyp

Fool! You should have watched him do all the cutting, then complained that he had more than his ‘fair share!’

            Have we taught you nothing????

Oh, so you HAD noticed about that, ey?

  • fragglerock61

Note that one of the goals listed is “reduce oil consumption.” It’s bad enough to expect oil companies to subsidize their competition, but actively trying to force consumers away from inexpensive and effective engery is criminal. This man is evil. End of story.

  • interestedobserver2

Hmm, back to the old “fees” versus “taxes” shenanigans again, I see. Taxes must be imposed by Congress, not the President. Calling this a fee is just another in a long line of usurpations by this administration.

Maybe we could get Mexico to pay it, just like the border fence.

I don’t know…”evil corporations” may be less willing to endure the unspeakable boredom of an Obama speech when they remember how he rhetorically did them over his whole administration. Or at least, one can hope.

Hurt the most if obama’s proposal goes forward are the low-info obama voters. They will think this is a great idea to punish ‘Big Oil”. They should get down on their knees and thank big oil for providing such cheap energy for decades.

  • DavidKramer

Paid by the oil companies, it is a FRELLING TAX on a product. It is paid by the consumer! Frelling politicians should be shot for lies as blatant as this………of course there would be no politicians left…….oh wait, that is a plus!
