As Twitchy reported, at a rally in Iowa today, Donald Trump said soldiers riding in armored vehicles hit by IEDs just “go for a little ride upward, and they come down.”

Wounded Warrior J.R. Salzman, who lost his arm — and very nearly his life — in an IED blast, responded to the remarks:

What was the context for Trump’s comment?

    • grais

He was yelling about 2,300 armored vehicles taken from us by the enemy. Probably planning to say how he’d fix all the mistakes some “dumb losers” made, but he went off on one of his stream-of-crazy tangents and said what’s quoted above about the miracle of armored vehicles.
      He’s a lunatic.

    • jumper297

That he’s an idiot… I find that context is the most expedient to apply to any and all Trumpisms.

    • Jeff Henderson ✓Bona Fide

He was commenting about us giving armored vehicles to allies who immediately abandon them on getting attacked and so a number of them ended up in the hands of our enemies. He was trying to make a point about the protective capabilities of our equipment and how such quality ends up in enemy hands. It was a bravado comment meant to commend the quality of our gear, but terribly delivered.

      • kd

This is important, Trump has brought up uncomfortable issues, but he is incapable of admitting when he is clueless and unable to discuss the most benign issues without being an asshole.

Does it matter? Trump is clueless when it comes to things like this anyways. Oh, and he lost Iowa…

      • Stuck_in_Ca√→

Yes, it matters. And considering Cruz’ ground game and Trump’s lack thereof I’d say this 4% point victory of Cruz’s is a non starter. Trump will clean up in the next two.

Come now, let’s not play coy. I don’t take you for the average trumpbot. Are you actually telling me you don’t see the similarities between Obama’s rise and election and Trump’s? If you don’t, you’re blind. It’s nothing more than a cult of personality. You’re smarter than this aren’t you?

          • Stuck_in_Ca√→

I’m not a Trumpbot whatever that is. I’m okay with Cruz, Rubio, or Trump. What I do see is how Trump has energized the country and people who would never ordinarily vote for a Republican. Cruz and Rubio do not have that mojo and therefore cannot beat Hilarious Rotten.

          • Silence Dogood

Obama energized them too. Look what happened. Trump is not going to help anyone but trump. And no, he’s the only one to beat shrillary. IF crazy uncle bernie can come that close, she’s in trouble.

If armored military vehicles are of little to no use — why’d we spend so darn much money on so many of them to protect our troops then? I mean, heck, if they’re so useless, then what’s the point of even buying them for millions and millions of dollars.

Oh — it’s because the armored vehicles really have saved lives and many soldiers have been left essentially unscathed comparatively speaking, if not shaken up a great deal, due to the armored vehicles on many an occasion. Not all mind you, but a great many have. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that Trump was mainly referring to MRAPs.

Anything goes when trying to diminish Trump using any tiny, little errant thing that establishment abiding rumpswabs can find or seize upon. Funny thing, though, his past isn’t really being used against him to much effect as there is nothing really there to speak of — and an errant claim that is as much truth as it is errant is all they’ve got to seize upon. The poor dears.

    • interestedobserver2

So, if I understand your reasoning, you think it’s an either/or thing with armor. You either have armor or you don’t, and if you have armor it’s going to protect you 100% all the time? And if it doesn’t, then it’s not worth having at all? Is that right?

Wow. Trumpbots are all as droolingly insane as he is.

    • Tom

Wrong. It’s because the enemy is not stupid and they learn how to overcome superior technology. And anyone who tells you MRAPs are invulnerable to mines, IEDs or RPGs is just plain wrong.

    • genes ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ᵈᵉᵖˡᵒʳᵃᵇˡᵉ

There’s a limit to how much armor you can put on something like a Humvee before it becomes USELESS for its intended task.

      • Roto ✓Intentionally Left Blank

Yep, just ask Aberdeen Proving Grounds when they were snapping off driveshafts and U-joints when TACOM was designing the next-gen. Long Term Armour Strategy kits for HMMWV’s. I tried to open one of the early designed doors, and had to use both arms to move it before they added the mechanical advantage kit.

    • Walter Sobchak

If you put enough armor on a Humvee to protect it against IEDs and RPGs the tires would burst and the axles would break.

      • genes ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ᵈᵉᵖˡᵒʳᵃᵇˡᵉ

And having an off-road vehicle that sinks to the frame when it leaves pavement would not be good.(possibly an exaggeration, but there were reports of up-armored Humvees getting stuck in sand)

At least the Trumpies haven’t (yet) started calling Salzman a misinformed ignoramous traitor who isn’t smart enough to understand His Royal Highness. But if he keeps it up, I’m sure the name-calling will start. Heck, if Christ Kyle disagreed with Trump, they’d turn on him, too.

    • DevilDocNowCiv

      maggie,

When I overwintered in Iraq, from ’05-’06, we called everything from getting jarred by an IED to being destroyed by it getting “blown up.” Most were “merely” jarring. This “mere” in quotes because they cause concussion, and (I was medical,so know this) we did an immediate performance test when such a Marine got back to the compound to see if he was “too” jarred to keep fighting.

But some were destroyed. Twice vehicles in convoys ahead of mine had that happen. In the one I remember best, which was very shortly before I got to the post where that convoy preceded mine, the driver was vaporized, and his boss next to him was “pancaked” against the roof. This is being instantly flattened by the explosive pressure.

IED’s were by far the most deadly threat, far worse than the enemy in person, who mostly avoided the Marines. For good reason. Very bad move here, Donald.

      • Suzyqpie

Thank you, sincerely, for your service and the sacrifice made by yourself and your family. My Dad was a WWII vet. Years later, perspective I guess, Dad referred to his experience in the Pacific in WWII as an “incredible adventure.” In the early ’70s when Jap (Dads label) & German cars were becoming the rage, Dad railed against doing business with the enemy.

        • DevilDocNowCiv

          Suzy,

My thanks to your Dad. Like I’ve told a couple of WW II vets who live in this neighborhood where my Mom lives (I watch her), the WW II guys had it much, much harder than we do today. And I shared your Dads feeling about it being an incredible adventure. I was one of many who specifically volunteered for both Iraq and Afghanland, not because I’m bloodthirsty or want bad things done. Rather, its happening whether I go or not, and I wanted to go, and knew it would be a valued experience, and it was.

      • Roto ✓Intentionally Left Blank

Bravo Zulu, Marine. Thank you for your service!!! And just to let you know, I was one of the CSS Civ’s at Army’s TACOM busting our asses to get you Add On Armor kits and A/C units as fast as we could. As soon as the armor contractor was done with some kits, we’d marry-up the A/C units and airlift them on anything that would fly… AMC flights, FedEx, whatever it took to get them downrange. And out of the other corner of our eye, we were looking ahead and designing the next generation of modular armor kits that have finally been deployed as the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (larger tactical vehicles had their own program names and coffee cups :-).

        • DevilDocNowCiv

          Roto,

I share your admiration for the Marines. I was their medical support, which we call Corpsmen. Or as our Big Boss calls us, Corps men. Clearly he doesn’t bother to find out anything about what he’s in charge of, but those guys and gals will remain Always Faithful (Semper Fi), regardless.

          • Roto ✓Intentionally Left Blank

I’m very familiar with the Hospital Corpsman rating. Get this… my Dad was Army, 99th Inf. 393rd/L, and came out alive from a little firefight they called “The Battle of the Bulge.” He passed away in 2001. Now, my Mom, 83 y.o., is still active in the Shriners and she has a new 93 y.o. “fiancé.” 🙂

During WWII, her new “fiancé” was a Corpsman onboard the CVE-21 USS Block Island escort carrier and sunk near the Cape Verde Islands chasing a German sub. Before his 30 days of Survivors Leave was up, he was called up for duty to the west coast on a new carrier CVE-106, ALSO named the USS Block Island. She put to sea for combat in Okinawa, Leyte, and Taiwan, where she evacuated Allied prisoners. My Mom sure can pick ’em. 🙂

          • DevilDocNowCiv

            Roto,

I offer sympathy for the loss of your dad, who I see as a heroic survivor of combat in WW II. Good luck with your Moms new hubby, and congrats on an active Mom. I watch mine, slightly older, also widowed.

Escort carriers were incredibly effective against the Imperial Japanese, and very vulnerable. I’m confused about his being a Navy Corpsman (like me), as well as a Soldier in the European theater, but dont say that in doubting you, and you dont have to explain. I just offer the note.

          • Roto ✓Intentionally Left Blank

Oh, no. Sorry, I r an inginerr and don’t write so goodly sometimes. 🙂

My Dad was the ETO Army veteran. After he passed away in 2001, she met another man, her fiancé, in about 2010 who was the Corpsman on the two carriers. I edited my original post to hopefully make that clearer, but I only took Technical Writing as an elective. 🙂
