Welp, that didn’t take long.
It’s just like Slate predicted!
People are buzzing today over the announcement that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman as host of “Late Show” when Letterman retires next year. But for many, excitement quickly turned to whining:
Of course the narrative went from "Congrats to Colbert!" to "White white white white white white white" in less than an hour. Ugh.

Friggin’ white males … they ruin everything!
In spite of being white, male, straight, popular, competent, and rich, Stephen Colbert has overcome the odds and succeeded.

As much as I love Colbert, I was kind of hoping late night TV could have someone who you know, isn't a white male.

So torn between liking Colbert and hating that late night TV continues to only see white dudes
— Nisha Chittal (@NishaChittal) April 10, 2014
I do love Colbert, but wouldn't mind some diversity in my late night viewing of funny white guys with dark hair. #Ellen

stephen colbert hosting late show is that victory cis straight white men have been waiting for
— Ryan J. Davis (@RyanNewYork) April 10, 2014
Listen I love Colbert as much as the next person. But isn't it about time for a late night lady instead of yet another white male?
— Rochelle Shipman (@rochelleshipman) April 10, 2014
I love Stephen Colbert, but they should change the name of every major late night show to “White Dudes and Desks”.
— A. Dan (@danielwolden) April 10, 2014
RT @bwerde And nothing against Colbert. But I think the world is ready & frankly needing a late night network host that isn't a white male.

I'm so happy for Stephen Colbert! It's refreshing to see a white, heterosexual man finally be able to break into late night. #LateShow

Listen, I love Colbert, but I also know WE NEED MORE DIVERSITY. Of course, CBS is as white as they come, so I'm not surprised.
— Ronald Short (@ronaldtheshort) April 10, 2014
YAY, more white dudes on late night! I love Colbert's cynicism and interviews. But I was just hoping for something… different. -M

The thing about Colbert is that he's a white dude.
— Typer (@coldshouldered) April 10, 2014
I love Colbert as much as anybody, but I need another white guy on late night like I need this second breakfast, which is to say NOT AT ALL.
— Dan Trainor (@dantrainor1) April 10, 2014
Love Colbert, but do we seriously need another middle-aged white man hosting a late night talk show? #Letterman
— Carla Bond (@carlabond) April 10, 2014
Stephen Colbert Will Be The Next Host Of "The Late Show" http://t.co/rtBtaR3TbX Was really hoping they would NOT choose another white male
— Dana Mascolo (@dnm11) April 10, 2014
WooHooo! Another white male lands a late night talk show! I dig Stephen Colbert. A lot. But I dig diversity more. @StephenAtHome
— Substantia Jones (@Adipositivity) April 10, 2014
I love Stephen Colbert but we just have another white male replacing a white male.

@LadyBizarro The only thing that can be really said about Colbert's new job is "oh look, white people win again."
— Words of Prey (@mcILLCROP) April 10, 2014
11.35pm, US TV. Any chat show host you like, as long as it's a 40+ year old white man. Equilibrium maintained. Love Colbert, but really?
— Geoff Lloyd (@GeoffLloyd) April 10, 2014
Colbert is cool and all but do we really need yet another white male late night talk host? I mean it's getting fucking ridiculous.
— Sarah Harian (@sarahharian) April 10, 2014
I mean I love Colbert, but did they really have to go in the white male direction again? Not surprised, just disappointed, CBS.
— Kailyn Reid (@kailynreid) April 10, 2014
Colbert's proven himself as one of the 'good ol boys'. Of course 'they' chose him to sit in a historically white seat — another white male.
— Russell Webster (@RussellWebster) April 10, 2014
Colbert for Late Show host? This is a win for white land-owning men everywhere!
