Earlier today, ABC News’ Jonathan Karl still wasn’t sure about what to ask president Obama at this afternoon’s presser. But eventually, he settled on a great question about the present strength of al Qaeda:

Here’s what Karl asked:

Mr. President, you have said that core al Qaeda has been decimated, that its leaders are on the run. Now that we’ve seen this terror threat that has resulted in embassies closed throughout the Arab world, much of Africa, do you still believe that al Qaeda has been decimated?

And Obama responded with his trademark backpedaling and intellectual acrobatics:

First of all, “core al Qaeda”?

Yep. That’s right.

And second of all, what the heck is he talking about?

Good. Lord.

Put another way:

Exactly.

They certainly do.
