CBS News' framing of terrorist attack against Israel leaves much to be desired (namely good journalism)

Last week, Israel was once again the target of a bloody and deadly terrorist attack, an attack that, as it happens, was celebrated by avowed terrorist group Hamas.

Coincidentally, that attack was carried out just a day after “The View” cohosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sunny Hostin, during a conversation about virulently antisemitic Democratic socialist Rep. Ilhan Omar, suggested that whether or not Hamas constitutes a terrorist organization “depends on who you talk to.”

“The View” is an ABC program, but for what it’s worth, it’s probably pretty safe to say that the folks at CBS News would agree with Goldberg and Hostin’s take. I’m basing that assumption on this tweet and report from CBS following the death of another victim in last week’s attack:

The text of that tweet is taken straight from CBS News’ report. A report that, rather notably, has a decidedly distant and annoyed tone.

But before we get into CBS News’ actual report, let’s just take a moment or two to unpack the above tweet, shall we?

“An Israeli man died on Saturday from wounds he sustained in twin blasts that hit Jerusalem earlier this week.” The Israeli man didn’t just die from wounds he sustained; he was murdered. Just because he wasn’t killed immediately doesn’t mean he wasn’t murdered. The twin blasts weren’t just freak explosions; they were carried out by terrorists who were quite actively trying to murder as many innocents as possible. It’s actually pretty straightforward, and yet you can actually picture CBS News wildly contorting themselves in an effort to downplay what happened.

And speaking of downplaying what happened, how about this bit: “explosions that Israeli police blamed on Palestinians.” That makes it sound like Israeli law enforcement has no basis in reality whatsoever to blame Palestinians for the attack. Or, rather, to blame Palestinian terrorists. It’s Palestinian terrorists who pose a very real and very frequent and very immediate threat to the safety of the entire State of Israel. Why does CBS News feel the need to make it sound like Israeli police are being irrational in linking a terrorist attack to Palestinian terrorists? Especially considering how many terrorist attacks Israel has sustained at the hands of Palestinian terrorists?

It’s hot garbage, is what it is. It’s also, unfortunately, what we should all have come to expect from our mainstream media over the past several years.

And now for the article:

While Palestinians have carried out stabbings, car rammings and shootings in recent years, bombing attacks have been very rare since the end of a Palestinian uprising nearly two decades ago.

No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the Jerusalem explosions.

Tensions between Israelis and Palestinians have been surging for months, amid nightly Israeli raids in the occupied West Bank prompted by a spate of deadly attacks against Israelis that killed 19 people in the spring.

More than 130 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli-Palestinian fighting in the West Bank and east Jerusalem this year, making 2022 the deadliest year since 2006. The Israeli army says most of the Palestinians killed have been militants. But stone-throwing youths protesting Israeli army incursions and others not involved in confrontations have also been killed.

What CBS News’ report quite conspicuously left out is the percentage of those more than 130 Palestinians killed in Israeli-Palestinian fighting in the West Bank and east Jerusalem in this year who were responsible for initiating the fighting. For far too long according to far too many mainstream media outlets, Israel is the aggressor because it’s defending itself from terrorists. The only way Israel can demonstrate that it doesn’t harbor any ill will toward Palestinian aggressors is to just roll over and let itself be obliterated.

God forbid CBS News and other cowardly media outlets acknowledge the truth: that terrorism is terrorism and that murder is murder and that Israel is not the evil party here.

See, CBS News? Was that so difficult?
