I’ve been out of college for a while now, but I’m still in the difficult and arduous of process of figuring out exactly what I want to be when I grow up. I majored in biology because for a while there, I thought my dream job would be working in a lab, studying genetic diseases and working on cures. After spending enough time in labs, though, I realized that that life wasn’t for me. I just don’t possess the requisite amount of patience to actually be able to do that. I like results. Waiting is hard, and in that line of work, there’s a lot of waiting. There’s also a lot of disappointment, which is not much fun, either.
I needed to find a career path that wouldn’t disappoint me. What about journalism? I thought about it for a time,. Northwestern had a very prestigious journalism program, and it was in my home state, and everybody knows that the journalism industry is very prestigious in its own right. I was pretty good writer and had a knack for research. I got an internship at a magazine … why not try journalism?
Well, as it turned out, there were plenty of reasons to not try journalism. And fortunately for me, I realized pretty quickly that I shouldn’t try it. Unfortunately a lot of poor saps apparently didn’t figure that out in time:
Journalism is by far the most regretted college major, with 87% saying they would have chosen a different major, per @ZipRecruiter survey.

Hey, Smug. It’s not polite to laugh at other people’s poor life choices.
Except you kinda have to laugh at this one, particularly given the state of modern mainstream journalism in this country. It’s decidedly not great, and it’s only getting worse. If I’d majored in journalism or gone to J-school, I’d probably be kicking myself pretty hard right about now.

Ha!
If universities adopted a policy of "Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back" they would all go bankrupt. What an amazing scam. https://t.co/7Mage2bYVq

But it’s an effective scam, as evidenced by the number of journalism majors who have bought into it and continue to buy into it.
Obviously ZipRecruiter is not the end-all, be-all of career satisfaction polling, but sociology is an absolute garbage major and it’s pretty plausible that journalism majors are even worse off.
In any event:
I regret 87% of journalists' choice of career.

We regret their decision as well.
