Old school fans will remember MC Lyte as the groundbreaking female rapper and gifted lyricist who spread positive messages in the late 1980s about the need for hip hop to respect women. Tonight, BET broadcast the Hip Hop Awards show and showed some of MC Lyte’s acceptance speech for a legacy award. Here’s the network’s backgrounder video:

MC Lyte’s blunt speech had lots of viewers buzzing on Twitter. She didn’t hold back in condemning ongoing misogyny in the industry. She also had choice words for women, too.
Preach!
