The Handmaid's Tale Isn't on the Right—It's in Surrogacy Mills and Chinese Billionaire Baby Factories

Many years ago in my early thirties (I am 50 now, full disclosure), a family member of mine approached me about being a surrogate for her. We are not only related, but best of friends, I had relatively easy pregnancies and deliveries and i was done having my own children. She desperately wanted a child, but because of medical issues, could not carry. I told her I absolutely would be willing to be a surrogate. I knew she and her husband would be great parents, the child would be completely biologically theirs (also, the child would be biologically related to me through our shared ancestry) and I would do nothing more than carry the baby. We ultimately decided against it, and I hadn't given much more thought to surrogacy until recently.

When the news of Pete Buttigieg and his husband adopting twins was published, I started reading more about surrogacy and really considering the costs to the children. They are being robbed of a mother, ripped away from their security at birth and sold as a commodity. As much as the Left contends the Right is acting out 'The Handmaid's Tale' in real life, they are they ones with lifestyles more closely aligned with this dystopian story. Then, I happened upon this article:

This is truly distressing. Not only is this man just churning out kids like they are factory models, he is running a scheme to make all of his children American citizens. Because their 'rent-a-womb' was born in America and they are born on American soil, they are American citizens even though they are shipped back to China as soon as they are born. When they are 18, however, they can come back to America and vote. They can eventually run for office and will be backed by their very wealthy father. He's playing a long game, but a couple of decades will pass in no time. So, we have not only the ethics (or lack thereof) of surrogacy, but a terrible American birthright citizenship loophole.

It's just another example of using American's empathetic and MYOB nature against us. Americans want people to have families. Many Americans understand the sting of infertility and the desire to have children above all else. This is why they support surrogacy. Bad actors take advantage of that and have now figured out a citizenship ruse to run alongside it. Once again, in our quest to be open minded in America, we've allowed our proverbial brains to fall out.

This should happen yesterday. At least part of this sticky wicket could be resolved before any more damage is done.

Indeed and without delay.
