Spare Your Family Heartbreak: Safeguard Children with Life-Saving Skills

As a Native Floridian and the mother of a firefighter/paramedic, the risk of child drowning is always on my mind. Living near Disney World, we’re surrounded by AirBnBs rented by families from across the country. After a long day at the parks, exhausted adults—sometimes after a few drinks—may not notice a child slip into the pool. The heartbreak for these families and the first responders who fight to save a child is unimaginable. I urge every family to invest in Infant Swim classes. They can save lives.

Infant Swim is not traditional swimming lessons. Children as young as 6 months can begin, attending 10-minute daily sessions for 6 weeks. The initial focus is on lifesaving skills, such as floating and locating the pool’s edge—behaviors that buy critical time until an adult can intervene. Kids can return annually for refresher courses to reinforce these skills. My own children participated, and while both were strong swimmers by age 3, that wasn’t the goal. The true aim was ensuring they could survive an accidental fall into a pool. Knowing your child has these skills brings immense peace of mind.

A troubling rumor is circulating that a child of a well-known mommy blogger may be in critical condition after a near-drowning incident in the family pool on May 12. Whether or not this is true, the news has sparked vital conversations about the very real dangers of child drowning. With this tragedy on people's minds, now is the perfect time to urge parents to enroll their children in infant swim lessons. If you're a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or godparent, consider offering to cover the cost of these lessons if finances are a barrier. Nothing is more important than ensuring the safety of a child you love.

It's even important for people without pools. There is water everywhere and it certainly can't hurt.

Please consider finding an instructor in your area. It can truly save a life.
