PPP: McCaskill leading Missouri Senate race by 6, but it could be close

Public Policy Polling, a left-leaning polling company, released a new poll tonight showing Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill leading Republican Rep. Todd Akin in Missouri’s Senate race, 46-40.

Eight percent of respondents were undecided, and those voters are overwhelmingly Republican-leaning. If most of the undecideds end up casting their votes for Akin, this race will be close.

Moreover, six percent of respondents said they will vote for the Libertarian candidate. Those voters favor Akin over McCaskill by a 2-to-1 margin. Perhaps Akin will be able to peel away some of those votes as Election Day nears.

The same poll shows GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney leading President Barack Obama by 6 points, 52 to 46.

The respondents in the poll broke down along party lines as follows: 34% Democrats, 37% Republicans, and 30 percent Independents.  The poll was conducted October 19-21, and the sample consisted of 582 likely voters.
