The military community and supporters are not happy with the widely misreported news that Tom Cruise compared his oh-so-grueling acting job to fighting in Afghanistan.
If I were @tomcruise's people I'd worry about this. Troops, vets +Gold Star families I know are infuriated.. http://t.co/1e3lNfVlyA

This is what I'm talking about re: @tomcruise PR problem….being shared on FB in mil community…. pic.twitter.com/caUlc3OnIs

But as CNN anchor Jake Tapper discovered, that’s not exactly what the actor said. For the record:
@jaketapper @instapundit @TomCruise Read pg173 of the deposition. Lawyer made the AFG comparison. TC said separation from kids was brutal.

@BaylorRangers where's deposition? Online?
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
@jaketapper Turns out lawyer brought up Afghanistan-Cruise said he hadn't heard comparison before, but separation from daughter was 'brutal'
— Byron York (@ByronYork) November 9, 2013
@ByronYork right tho his counsel coined it and he agreed
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
More clarity: p173 cruise says separation from daughter while shooting film feels brutal like being in afghanistan… http://t.co/2xJ8zjxbG9

Tom Cruise deposition 2 by New York Post
@jaketapper But at least he could fly her to him or vice versa. I cant believe he said this.

Even with “clarity” (a word not often used in association with Tom Cruise), Tapper notes that the actor was still way off the mark.

@benchowd it's nothing — NOTHING — like being deployed to Afghanistan.
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
1++++++ //@jaketapper: @benchowd it's nothing — NOTHING — like being deployed to Afghanistan.
— Carla Bond ? (@carlabond) November 9, 2013
@ByronYork I get that it's about absence from suri, but having been in war zones w troops missing their babies I assure him nothing like it
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
Tapper’s not impressed with arguments to the contrary.
Sounds like Cruise intensely missed his daughter and was trying to come up with a way to convey that. Isn't that empathizing w/our troops?

@jaketapper or not…?
— The Curve Is Bent. Time to Free Us! (@NolteNC) November 9, 2013
@jaketapper I don't think hyperbole in that kind of stressful situation should be translated into disrespect for the troops.
— The Curve Is Bent. Time to Free Us! (@NolteNC) November 9, 2013
@NolteNC Just an emotion an actor expressed in deposition. But I can see why troops who have longed for their families in war zones are POed
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
@jaketapper fair enuf. maybe my affection for FAR AND AWAY is clouding my judgment. Not the first time. .
— The Curve Is Bent. Time to Free Us! (@NolteNC) November 9, 2013
@NolteNC he's a compelling actor…no question
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
@jaketapper @NolteNC By compelling, do you mean diminutive?
— Gravedancing Jigmaster (@TheBrickPillow) November 9, 2013
Update:
This tweet from Tapper about Cruise’s poor comparison is worth an update:
@mchastain81 @jason_howerton @TomCruise there is no longing like that of someone in harms way who might never see a loved one again
— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) November 9, 2013
@jaketapper Bingo! @jason_howerton @TomCruise
— Mary #FlyTheW (@mchastain81) November 9, 2013
Update:
Jake Tapper followed up and shared even more context from Cruise’s deposition. Cruise was asked to clarify if he believes that separation from his daughter while filming a movie is the same as military deployment. “Oh come on,” he replied, “you know, we’re making a movie.”
