Wall Street Journal reporter Byron Tau has an important reminder for anyone (mostly Senate Democrats) who may be confused about what an FBI background check actually includes.
FBI background check is not criminal investigation. FBI gathers and passes information to decision-makers for their use. Cannot issue subpoenas or compel cooperation. Questions of political interference are also different — this is being done as a service for the White House.

Despite what many Democrats would like everyone to believe, it is not a criminal investigation and it does not end with a conclusion.
It can't be stated enough that the FBI investigation Dems want will not result in charges or any kind of definitive conclusion.
They simply do a background check to get as much info as they can.
Everyone hoping this somehow ends with concrete answers will be very disappointed. https://t.co/WIQwelGQWl

Democrats know this.
They also know that the FBI background check is a way to delay the inevitable vote that will confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
