U.S. tennis star Coco Gauff, 17, has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the Olympics:

It’s already dumb, and, we expect, about to get dumber:

So far, the only information comes from Gauff’s social media feed, so we don’t know if she’s symptomatic or not or if she was vaccinated:

Is she symptomatic? Why can’t she compete if she feels OK? It’s tennis – she doesn’t have to be close to anyone. https://t.co/OZjkQ6DYwg

And, from the looks of it, there will be many more athletes that won’t be able to compete because of it:
A thread on all the stuff that’s not going very well so far at the Olympics:
1/ Positive cases and contact tracing are taking down athletes. Coco Gauff out of the tennis, two South African footballers also positive as well as the SA sevens rugby coach

2/ Russian men’s quadruple sculls have pulled out because they don’t have good enough reserves. A group of British gymnasts are isolating after a case on their flight

4/ Multiple officials are testing positive – including a Nigerian 60 year old who is now in hospital and a South Korean IOC member who is now having to isolate for 14 days. He was double vaccinated.

And we’re seeing complaints about mask-wearing:
7/ All this, and the conditions for competing here increasingly difficult. It’s close to 100 degrees most days, which makes wearing masks very uncomfortable.

Sigh.
