According to Local 10 in Ft. Lauderdale, the lucky hat guy was accompanied by 3 other men and 2 women, one of whom is pregnant.
Since the migrants made it to shore before the Coast Guard could capture them at sea, they are permitted to stay in the United States under what is known as “wet foot, dry foot” policy.
A different group of Cuban migrants, who were captured clinging to lighthouse near the Florida Keys in May, are attempting to argue that the lighthouse itself counts as dry land and therefore should be allowed to stay in the U.S., too:
