As President Obama and a bunch of other liberals have told us before, Australia is some sort of utopia because of its restrictive gun laws. Except if you’re a shopkeeper who keeps getting robbed by gun-toting thugs and you have to defend yourself with an “improvised flamethrower”:

The flamethrower consisted of insect spray and a lighter:

And check out how fast Mr. Rigney reacts. Here you can Rigney grab the spray and a lighter as soon as he sees the first of the masked men enter the store:Screenshot 2016-01-31 at 8.36.54 PM

Screenshot 2016-01-31 at 8.36.54 PM

Rigby is already firing at the first thug as the second one enters, but no flames … yet:

Screenshot 2016-01-31 at 8.40.45 PM

We have ignition! Rigney was able to use the flames as a diversion and escape:

Screenshot 2016-01-31 at 8.33.14 PM

Rigney was robbed in 2010, but he didn’t use a flamethrower that time:

Mr Rigney’s act of retaliation marks the second time he has stood his ground against thieves.

In 2010, he chased an armed bandit down the road into the arms of waiting officers.

You can watch the entire video of the attack here.

    That is so awesome.

    • Ham ☑ – Only ✝Christ Matters

I call bull, because according to libserfs, a civilized country like Australia is so far ahead of us becasue they ban guns. So the robbers couldn’t have been armed. I mean Obummer said this kind of thing doesn’t happen in other civilized countries that ban guns, like it does here in the U.S.

So this is obviously some type of right wing conspiracy.

Too bad his own government tied his hands behind his back and wouldn’t let him have the same ability to defend himself as the criminals had to put his life in danger.

      • sgreum

I live about an hour’s drive away from where this happened and I’m surprised he hasn’t been charged with something for defending himself. Maybe on the scale of things improvised flame throwers are considered less dangerous than guns by the cops and his defence wasn’t “disproportionate”.

        • SameJerkDifferentName

In the US, he probably would be charged with a crime because on every can it clearly says, “It is a violation of federal law to use this product inconsistent with it’s labeling.”

          • Penny✓ItsSoFluffy! #GoBolts!

I’m laughing because that’s probably true.

          • Deplorable Jesse-Messy Hammer

..Are y’all kidding? In the USA, the Left would be saying “well at least he didn’t need a gun like those 2ARWNJs would say he needed”. …Oh wait I forgot: It’d take a modicum of “self-awareness” to say even this, but we’re talking about Liberals FFS. My bad.

          • Penny✓ItsSoFluffy! #GoBolts!

          • sgreum

I’ve seen it happen in Australia, though not for a while – they actually have an informal list of what is proportional in self defence and you never know whether the thing you used is “proportional” to the weapon the crim used against you. It’s really dumb, you have to stop while someone is trying to harm or kill you and think “Is this large metal pipe really a proportional reaction to the thug’s knife? Would a two-by-four be a fairer weapon?” and hope that the cops and the courts are fine with you cracking his skull with it.

          • SameJerkDifferentName

Now THAT is insane. I’m guessing my .45 solution wouldn’t be very popular with your judicial system.

          • sgreum

No, it’s a Category H weapon that requires you to be a member of a “Sports Shooters Club”, hold a “Concealable Weapons License”, and apply and be approved for a “High Calibre Weapons Permit”. If you don’t get the latter you are restricted to no more than .38 weapons. Also if it is semi-auto it is strictly verboten unless it has an overall length of 250mm (25cm or 10″) unless it’s barrel length is over 120mm (12cm or ~6″).

          • CoastalMaineBird

“Officer, two giant flies, armed with guns, came into my shop, and I used this fly killer in a manner consistent with its labelling”.

          • Mark81150 school of the Duke

            well… they WERE insects…..
            why quibble about which species?

        • Perso Nasplit

Fairly sure we cant own flamethrowers, in pretty much any country, so I can see why youd think an improvised one would be banned too. Sad the law abiding citizens have to resort to something like this. Obviously the criminals didnt hear that guns were banned…..

          • sgreum

He doesn’t own a flame thrower – he owned a spray can and a lighter with which he lit the flammable gasses in the can. That’s not a flamethrower so he should be safe. But then again, we’ve seen, in supposedly civilised countries, cases where otherwise law abiding citizens have been treated as criminals simply for defending themselves.

Australia is potentially a place for that because under law we have no legal right to self defence and technically can be prosecuted for any self defense regardless of the method. Fortunately we have very few completely stupid judges and police officers so that just doesn’t happen.

And quelle horreur! Criminals being criminals, surely not!

    • Kevin Giltrud

Much more effective than Pepper Spray… Scarier too!

      • Arttie the Deplorable

It actually might work using a can of pepper spray with the correct propellant.. Who’s the McGuyver that will tell us?

        • kcinmo

Those cans of air used for blowing dirt out of computers, etc., are flammable.

          • TexSizzle

And if you hold them upside down, they discharge a stream of liquid, for better effect when you light it.

        • Kevin Giltrud

Pour the contents of the Pepper Spray container into a Seltzer bottle. Charge a CO 2 “Whippet” cartridge under the nozzle and press the lever?

        • Philly Cheesesteak

Anything in an aerosol can can be used like that. It’s the propellant that burns, not the contents.

    • Jake Wilde

That is how I kept my four older sisters at bay.

    • CoastalMaineBird

If the perps had run out of the store with their hair on fire, that would have been awesome.

As it it, though, the flamethrower just confused them long enough for the shopkeeper to get out the door. The robbers still got cash and stuff after the keeper fled.

Not as bad, or as good, as it could have been.

  • tops116 ✓Quipper

It’s legal (in the US anyway) to buy a flamethrower. But hard to get jelly gasoline and also not recommended for concealed carry or home defense if you have anything flammable in your house.

  • Lord Foggybottom

ZOMG! How did such thugs ever obtain guns and register them in anti-gun Australia? Especially sawed off rifles. Unfortunately the shop owner didn’t turn them into crispy critters and they were able to steal $600+ while he ran away. He probably would have been better off with wasp spray aiming it at their eyes followed with a baseball bat.

I’m so glad the robbers weren’t needlessly killed. Now they can continue their life’s work without fear of harm from vigilantes like this shop owner. — Although a well aimed “warning shot” from a .38 aimed at the third button down might help the miscreants see the error of their ways as well as possibly putting them out of the taxpayers’ misery.
