Ryan Lizza of the New Yorker did some digging on that controversial mailer sent out by the Ted Cruz campaign that named and graded voters in the recipient’s neighborhood, and it doesn’t make Cruz look very good.

An excerpt from Lizza’s story:

Oof.

Rubio slammed the mailer yesterday, insinuating that it made Cruz look desperate:

However, it turns out that Rubio’s campaign sent out a similar mailer, albeit one without naming names:

Not only trick mailers, but now a fake newspaper supporting Ted Cruz has been added to the mix:

Deep breaths, people. It will all be over tomorrow — at least, in Iowa.

      • Pandabucks

        You’re dodging the point:

The mailer was clearly intended to cause shame and fear in as many people as possible. Some people–especially elderly citizens who had never seen something like this and were more susceptible–were clearly SUPPOSED to be frightened into attending Caucus. Had Cruz believed no one would fall for his deception and be frightened, he would not have mailed it.

You know all this, of course. You just don’t care. You just want to excuse Ted’s actions because, like so many of his followers, you lack character or principle.

        • Kelli

It was meant to get peoples attention and get them to the polls. If people feel shame, that’s their own guilty conscience for not doing their civic duty.

          • Pandabucks

That’s complete nonsense. The mailing was worded as it was to have a desired effect, which was clearly to shame and scare.

You Cruz supporters will literally say ANYTHING to excuse the actions of your “Champion of Principle.”

My goodness. So this is what it’s like to give oneself over to some cult-like experience. You’ll defend your great leader no matter what he does.

          • Kelli

If you’re for Trump, he has done and said MUCH worse, and Rubio is a lying sack of establishment dog poop. This is harmless, PUBLIC knowledge and has everyone talking about him. And hopefully it gets people off their rumps.

          • Pandabucks

I support neither, and your complete lack of principle sickens me.

Cruz is just right for you; all the piety with none of the character or standards.

  • Dobermite

      Yeah junk mail is scary./

      • RalphCifaretto

It’s not just junk mail, it’s invasion of privacy.

        • bil_g

If it’s public record, it’s not invasion of privacy. I don’t like these tactics either, it’s icky, but if you don’t want to be exposed to this sort of stuff. don’t vote. Or work on changing the rules.

          • RalphCifaretto

So, you’re OK with someone you don’t know getting a mailer with your name and supposed voting record on it?

          • bil_g

So, you only read the first sentence.

          • RalphCifaretto

Dude, you know you wouldn’t be ok with this if it was a different candidate.

          • bil_g

Show me where I said I was ok with it.

          • RalphCifaretto

Then I don’t understand what point you’re making.

          • bil_g

Just that it’s not an invasion of privacy. It’s public info that they can use – for better or worse. A consequence of exercising our right to vote. Not voting for those that use it in such a way is my recourse, if I so choose.

Icky, but legal. It is what it is – and I hate that phrase. 🙂

          • RalphCifaretto

It’s public info if you search for it. What Cruz did was send it in a mailer with misleading numbers and publicly shaming people and their neighbors by name. I think it’s sleazy and if i ever get something like this from a campaign, I’d never, ever vote for them. I don’t want my neighbors down the street that I don’t know getting ANY information about me. It’s really shady.

          • bil_g

Your choice. But don’t think for a second Cruz invented this. It’s copy/paste campaign pablum. Junk mail. All candidates search for this data – if they’re smart. If the recipients aren’t aware of this, it’s on them. Ignorance provides substantial shade.

Ever gotten a ticket and paid it online? Lots of useful info about your fellow “lawbreakers” is available quite easily. I don’t even have to be a violator to get to this info. Just go and pick a court date.

Given the direct choice, I wouldn’t want my neighbors to know my voting record either. But I also know what it takes to do that. I just find the cost too high and not worth it, so I accept the consequences.

          • RalphCifaretto

So, it’s business as usual with Cruz, then? Isn’t that the whole cornerstone of his campaign, that he’s not just another politician? It’s ok with you that he’ll do anything to get votes? I realize people have used this information before to get out the voted. But I don’t recall campaigns using people’s actual names and names of their neighbors in these mailers. I would never vote for a campaign that sent something like that to me.

    • grais

Well, it is a bit creepy. That’s how this stuff works, unfortunately. Evidently Ted was willing to risk the negatives hoping for the positives. We’ll see if it does him any good.

It is creepy. I get creepy stuff from the GOP all the time; I just say ‘bite me’ and throw it in the trash. Indeed, we’d all be calling it the typical Alinskyite tactics of the left.

    • tops116 ✓Quipper

Point of fact: Democrats have done this and a number of people defending Cruz now condemned the tactic at the time. I don’t believe this a game changer as far as supporting Cruz goes, but it is scummy (albeit not half as scummy as seeing Cruz supporters make excuses for it–after initially claiming the whole thing was a hoax to smear Cruz, no less).

      • aztectrumpet

A lot of people are defending it

    • The Dragon

Yeah. I’m a Cruz guy through and through, but this mailer went overboard a bit. It got people’s attention, but there are better ways to go about it. Unlike the left and certain followers of a current candidate on our side, I can admit when my guy does something wrong.

      • nc ✓s & balances

I haven’t seen anyone saying “yay this was GREAT!” But the response is more than “a bit” overboard. Once the woman used words like “shaming” and “bully” that’s all a lot of people saw. Then people jump off from there, like this is something new and horrible, when in fact it’s SOP in most campaigns, D or R.

The truth is it’s an excuse to BASH CRUZ who many people see as a threat.

        • aztectrumpet

Yea to call this “bullying” and “threatening cripples” is ridiculous. Here’s looking at you, Dobermite.

        • The Dragon

True. It is absolutely just another reason to tear down our best candidate. And the information on those mailers is public information anyway. It’s not like they stole some classified information or something.

  • Dobermite

    Open letter to Ted Cruz,

I know you are trying to impersonate Trump here, by refusing to apologize for your despicable behavior, but here’s the difference between you and Trump. Trump refuses to apologize for having America’s best interest at heart and violating the tenets of political correctness, whether its evicting illegals, building a wall to protect our borders, telling the truth about Mexico unloading their criminals on the United States, or calling for a pause on Muslim immigration, lest we import more terrorists.

You, OTOH, Mr. slimy lawyer, are refusing to apologize for scaring crippled old ladies and threatening the voters, and its self serving, just so you can win the Iowa caucus, which is why every evangelical should abandon your campaign in mass.

  • HENCHMAN 0804

I, like many, think the mailer was not the best thought out tactic, especially this close to the election. I don’t know how many people will change their vote because of it but if this is all it takes for them to abandon their personal convictions, they probably should stay home.

  • Jill

I am becoming more and more convinced that we will deserve the garbage government we get. • tops116 ✓Quipper

And as I keep saying, people defending Cruz on this weren’t cutting Democrats any slack on this.

“They centered on Cruz cuz they’re all scared to death of him.”

Pretty sure it has more to do with the fact that Cruz’s mailer had (as Guy put it) violation verbiage and named names. That’s why Rubio is getting more slack; his mailers don’t have that, and he ended up having the perfect “at least I didn’t do that” defense.

      • Lamontyoubigdummy

Agree. It’s risky to do these type mailers period, but everybody does ’em in caucus states. Bad idea to list neighbors.

    • tops116 ✓Quipper

Point of order: when this mailer story broke, some Cruz fans on Twitter claimed the guy that first complained was a liar and a plant, and then demonized him. Once he was proven right and the campaign admitted what they did, those same Cruz fans pretended nothing happened. Funny how things work out.

Trying to claim that someone who complained about your preferred candidate is a liar (to the point of faking being crippled) is inherently disgusting. It’s basically doing what a liberal would do. Jesus, Kent, we went through this crap with Wendy Davis’s campaign insisting that Abbott faked his accident.

I got a flyer in the mai from Albertson’s that said BIG NEWS! But it was just coupons and no news…WAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHH I want the government to come and save me from my local supermarket’s misleading flyers and I want my mommy!!!! WWWWAAAGH!

  • Dobermite

Now you are seeing why this guy is so universally despised by his colleagues. I used to think it was because he’s an uncompromising conservative fighting a corrupt institution, but I’ve come to see its a lot more than that and this is yet another indication of it. I mean think about it, how is it that even his most conservative colleagues in the Senate, guys like Jeff Sessions and Mike Lee, guys who should be his natural allies, still haven’t endorsed him either?

I think you are seeing why …

“I’m crippled, so I can’t go to the caucus,” (Donna) Holstein said. She was not happy about being shamed in front of her neighbors. “That’s what you call a bully,” she said about Cruz’s tactics. “I wish he would quit.”

    • R.C.

So if Cruz is elected and no one will work with him and Washington basically stands still for four years……Im not seeing that as a bad deal either.

    • Lamontyoubigdummy

So you’re upset with Rubio sending out the same mailer, right? Or Jeb?

Cuz they’ve done it. In Iowa and New Hampshire.

      • Dobermite

I’m no fan of Rubio’s (or Jeb’s), but in fairness his mailer was not nearly as egregious as Cruz’s. Cruz NAMED NAMES and threatened to shame people with more outings to their neighbors. That was like something the left does to opponents of gay marriage. Despicable.

And he also designed it to look like it was an official Iowa warning.

        • R.C.

Maybe a good ‘draw and quarter’ for the Cunadian!
          That will teach him!

        • Lamontyoubigdummy

          Yeah.

Don’t care about the “official warning” thing. That’s been done to death on both sides across all caucus states for years.

But listing the neighbors was a weapons grade stupid idea.

Whoever on the campaign came up with that should be shot out of a catapult as far away as possible.

      • Pandabucks

I saw both. No comparison. Not even close.
That said, I still oppose Rubio’s mailer, even though it isn’t thoroughly despicable like Cruz’s.

    • R.C.

I’ll say right up front, I don’t like the shaming mailers and I wish Team Cruz wouldn’t have used them the way they did. Surely there are classier ways to go about it. That being said: I do think some of the pearl clutching is a bit overdone as well

    • Kawfy

ah that’s for show…I’m certain they had dem volunteers scouring the area for the offended….AND I agree 100% with your statement.

There are no standards left in politics. And if democrats did not have double standards, they would have no standards at all…
My question to every American would be…..And whose fault is it that we have allowed corrupt lying bullies to be leaders? Why is everyone so upset with Cruz, Trump , Rubio, when Obama tactics and HIllary’s lies have caused death and bankruptcy ?

      • Kawfy

Morality and ethics should not be party specific but universal. It is in “real life” But, those in politics seems to be exempt. It’s as if it is some unwritten rule that they are not capable of high standards and therefore should not be held to them.

Are some people overreacting to the mailers? Yes. Are Cruz fans overreacting to people overreacting to the mailers? Oh, God, yes.

I’ve been poking around Twitter and saw a number of Cruz fans demonize that first guy who reported getting the mailer. Yeesh, it was like throwing a piece of meat to some rabid dogs. ‘Course, when the Cruz campaign admitted what they did, then those same fans immediately shifted to saying “Oh, it’s okay,” “Who cares?”, and “Hey, quit picking on Cruz ’cause everyone does it.” Yeah, everyone does it, and they get criticized for it. Funny thing, people who defend Cruz on this now weren’t doing that the last time Democrats pulled this kinda stunt. Funny how that works out. *cough* Hypocrites! *cough*

I am not outraged by this mailer in the slightest. It’s scummy and stupid, but not a game changer in the slightest. Policy matters a helluva lot more than this, and I agree with Cruz on a lot. I am outraged, though, by Cruz fans acting like Trump supporters when the situation suits them. You’d be raising hell if anyone else did this, and you know it. Hell, I’m seeing a number of people trying to say “But Rubio did it, too” all while ignoring the fact that tone/content of the damn mailers are vastly different.

Look, I get it. It’s crunch time and Cruz staked a lot on beating Trump in Iowa. His supporters want him to win. Hell, I support Cruz and want him to beat Trump, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to flip-flop on principle just because my guy did it. To be blunt, memo to my fellow Cruz supporters: stop acting like liberals and grow the hell up, you hypocrites.

    • Kawfy

preach it baby! You are exactly right.

  • junkbondtrader41

I take it I’m not the only one who’s noticed – and I’m not a Cruz supporter – that “bully” is getting to be a fairly ubiquitous term hurled by the left. It means, “any conservative who doesn’t curl up into the fetal position and apologize for being ‘racist,’ ‘sexist,’ or ‘homophobic,’ and actually hits back!”

    • Pandabucks

True, but Ted was called a bully by a wheelchair-ridden woman who found his shaming “violation” letter to be offensive.

      Pretty different.

      • cajun_2

Hillary told a mother, her son died in Benghazi because of a video. THEN called that mother a liar. Guess if that woman was in a wheelchair, it would have gotten noticed.

        • Pandabucks

          I don’t for a second compare Cruz’s actions to Hillary. She’s a monster.

          • cajun_2

A monster because of what we know. Imagine what we don’t know..

          • Pandabucks

            Well stated.

      • rosetta_stoned

but Ted was called a bully by a wheelchair-ridden woman who found his shaming “violation” letter to be offensive.

So? She’s in a wheelchair so her words somehow carry more weight?

        Doesn’t work that way.

        • Pandabucks

His mailing was offensive, shaming, and threatening on its face–regardless of whether it’s recipient was in a wheelchair. This one was.

Look, principles and kindness mean nothing to a Cruz supporter, so just go away. It’s exhausting trying to explain virtue to those for whom it is a foreign concept.

          We’re done here.

  • http://youhavetobethistalltogoonthisride.blogspot.com/ keyboard jockey

The Iowa caucus is supposed to separate the wheat from the chaff. In 2008 Obama was able to get 35,000 Latinos in Iowa to caucus for him the republicans got 1,000. The republicans have an opportunity to increase their Latino turnout in 2016 will they? Because that’s what the mailer narrative is all about turning out caucus goers that’s the short game. It’s the long game turning out desirable demographics single women, millennials and Hispanics that’s the long game eroding the dem’s support among these groups of caucus voters .

It’s hard for me to understand how he could have been so, so, so very careless right on the cusp of a moment in his campaign that is pivotal. I really can’t make sense of how he could pull a stunt like this right before an event that can make or break his campaign. So careless.

  • Shoeless Joe

Cruz really went unethical here. The implication is a violation of the law, absurd but any fair
    reading leads you there.
IMO, Trump nails him tomorrow, with his people turning out.

    • Pandabucks

I had Cruz surging to a 15 point win over Trump in Iowa, until this mailer came out. Now, it’s actually a close race–even though I still don’t think Trump’s people will turn out. At any rate, whatever Cruz gets, it would have been at least 10 points higher, in my view.

  • The_Kat ✓vilified

This type of campaign tactic has been going on for years because people’s voting records are public information and if someone is registered with a particular party, one knows the party they support. I remember when Democrats were using this tactic with campaign workers to target certain voters when going door to door. Not that I approve of it but people are acting like this is something new.

I HATE negative campaigning and prefer that candidates leave the negative ads to PAC groups. The negative ads always come back to bite them in the ass. Unless they are Democrats of course. Personally I was more bothered by Cruz’s “Rubio is the Republican Obama” ads than these mailers.

Funny thing is when Democrats use this same tactic, we never hear a word about it except in conservative blogs.

In his own self-interest, of course. The larger point being it was her house. She didn’t have to accept any offer. I’ve seen less notable entities than Trump do the same thing, and it irritates me every time. Just because I have something someone else wants doesn’t mean I have to let them have it—for any price.

  • https://twitter.com/UnicornOfMayhem Hi This Is My Username

I like how they make it sound like Cruz did this on purpose. Like he knew the woman was crippled and he just had to go after her in this fashion.

I could be wrong, but don’t candidates hire people to run their campaign for them, thus crappy ideas being their fault? I’m not trying to make an excuse for Cruz, I just didn’t know he is the only person running his campaign. I just can’t picture him making these mailers and sending them out. Lol.

Hell, this country has gone insane.

    • TheForgottenTimeZone

Obviously (at least to rational, casual observers), he didn’t create this himself. However, he hired the campaign consultant/s who did. And this is the person who promises to “change the culture [in Washington]” and yet, he hires those who do the same things that all the other slimeballs do. That’s the difference in my book.

      • Hi This Is My Username

I get that, but I’m wondering if he knew this was the plan they came up with before they were sent out. If not, maybe he’ll weed out the person behind them.
