Illegal-immigrant and journalist Jose Antonio Vargas started the hashtag #JournalismSoWhite earlier today to bring attention to the fact that liberal editors and publishers at liberal publications who hire mostly liberal writers have a diversity problem of their own, just like the liberals out in Hollywood:
Since we're discussing #OscarsSoWhite, can we add #JournalismSoWhite and #CongressSoWhite? @emergingUS
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
Yes, let’s discuss this!
American newsrooms are less diverse now than when I started in journalism in 1999. A disgrace. And irresponsible. #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
how many political reporters of color are covering 2016 presidential campaign? #journalismsowhite @emergingUS
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
when White journalists report on race, it's "reporting"; when journalists of color do it, it's "having an agenda" #journalismsowhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
Shame on you New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc., etc,. etc.! He continued over on Facebook:
Yes, #OscarsSoWhite. But we must also examine why #JournalismSoWhite: https://t.co/P6sqOPkhKD @emergingUS pic.twitter.com/dVfNaaUdk2
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
All great points! Why is it that liberals hate diversity?
He wasn’t done, however, and started calling out journos by name including Chuck Todd and liberal publications like Vice, Vox and Gawker:
.@brianstelter, I hope you analyze #journalismsowhite. Begin with your newsroom, @cnn. cc @DylanByers

#JournalismSoWhite = Sunday morning talk shows. Why does @donnabrazile have to be the only Black person?
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
Dear @chucktodd: Have u ever thought about having a @meetthepress show w/ all people of color journalists? #JournalismSoWhite @emergingUS
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
A big part of newspaper decline is due to 2 failures, one technological, the other demographic. #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
How many journalists of color work at @VICE, @voxdotcom, @Gawker? #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
And when journalists of color DO WORK in newsrooms, how often are they told to "stay objective," "be neutral"? #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
We need more White journalists to look around THEIR OWN NEWSROOMS and say that #JournalismSoWhite is unacceptable.
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
Facts are facts. But "Objectivity" largely resides in the capital city of #JournalismSoWhite.
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
I'm gay, undocumented, look Asian, Latino name. I can't afford to be objective. #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
How many non-White editors commission and edit op-eds at @nytopinion @nytimes @sulliview #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
If news media is examining diversity of Hollywood, Silicon Valley, etc, then we must also examine our own industry. #JournalismSoWhite
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) January 22, 2016
when White journalists report on race, it's "reporting"; when journalists of color do it, it's "having an agenda" #journalismsowhite
