Yesterday, State Department Spokesman John Kirby admitted that the a $400 million payment to Iran was contingent upon the release of four U.S. citizens being held in that country, but denied that it was any sort of ransom payment. Instead, the Obama administration is using a different word:
State Dept: US used plane with $400M in cash as "leverage" to ensure Iran released prisoners https://t.co/hfXb06Sjtk pic.twitter.com/kJnvyVG7CX

It depends on what your definition of “leverage” is:
We used the leverage of our lunch money to force the bully to take our heads out of the toilethttps://t.co/F9pw4bwBOH

The State Department’s “not a ransom” spin is sure to continue evolving today.
