The U.S. State Department’s hope that Vladimir Putin will “live by the promise of the hashtag” has been mercilessly mocked, and for good reason.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz had a reminder for the State Department:
Note to the State Department: "The promise of a hashtag" isn't going to make Putin pull out of Ukraine.

Others joined Cruz in highly doubting that a hashtag will cause Putin to leave Ukraine:

@SenTedCruz Rather it will make the US an object of mockery and scorn!

@SenTedCruz I guess Putin doesn't want to participate in obama's anti-bullying campaign.

@SenTedCruz what about when combined with a Facebook group AND a Google hangout?
— Milton Friedman (@LiberalNonsense) April 25, 2014
@SenTedCruz How absurd. Sounds like Clinton's State Dept and their Reset button, another failure.

Whether the answer to that last question is “January 20, 2015” remains to be seen.
