Not only that, but he used the New York Times to do so, not that he probably had to twist any arms:

Here’s a direct quote:
"It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation." -Putin http://t.co/5tCMrvvqbU

An expanded version:
My working and personal relationship with President Obama is marked by growing trust. I appreciate this. I carefully studied his address to the nation on Tuesday. And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States’ policy is “what makes America different. It’s what makes us exceptional.” It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.
There’s a certain amount of global “you didn’t build that” bravado in that paragraph by Putin.
@JeffreyGoldberg @nytimes We will bury you in irony.

Dana Perino would like to meet the person who penned Putin’s op-ed:
Recommended
@JeffreyGoldberg @nytimes seriously! I would love to meet the American pr "pro" that wrote that for him.

If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to read Putin’s entire article, here is the “quick read” version:
@JeffreyGoldberg @nytimes Putin:"Ha. America. Big deal. Maybe not such a bad country. Shame if anything should happen to it."

Let the good times troll:
Nobody, nobody can troll like Putin.

The Russian president just trolled an embarrassed United States in its paper of record on September 11th. Everything I love is dead.

Here’s our closing thought:
At least Russia is the kind of free, open society that will allow President Obama to respond in their biggest newspaper. Oh wait.
