DC Councilwoman Agrees Curfews Are a ‘Dangerous’ Way to Deal With Teen Takeovers

Imgflip

They've been called "large gatherings" and "teen takeovers." As our own Grateful Calvin reported last fall, Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a limited juvenile curfew for anyone under the age of 18, from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., after a teen takeover on Halloween night got out of hand:

The curfew was in effect for only a week, but there's been talk of bringing it back. As I reported, the ACLU registered its opposition to imposing a curfew on teenagers because it put vulnerable youth at risk of police encounters. That's kind of the idea … you make it a policy that teens aren't allowed out and about unaccompanied after 11 p.m., and if a cop runs into one, they send them home.

Obviously, I wonder what kinds of parents are allowing their teen children to run around the city at night. Is there something wrong with knowing where your child is? I didn't live the most exciting life as a teenager, and I stayed out until after 11 p.m. I worked the 4 p.m. to midnight shift at a grocery store, mopping the floor and stocking shelves. All things considered, I'd rather have been home in bed.

D.C. Councilwoman Janeese George agrees with the ACLU in that a curfew is "dangerous," what with federal troops and masked ICE agents running around armed and anxious to open fire.

Won't someone think of the children?

Don't they have school in the morning?

Exactly. It's just like liberals' policy toward illegal immigration. Just ignore it. Don't do anything.

A curfew would place some responsibility on parents, and we can't have that. Personal responsibility is a no-no.
