One great thing about Twitter 2.0 is that we’re seeing “Community Notes” appended more often. For example, Robert Reich’s tweet on corporate greed being responsible for the high price of eggs was given the additional context that the avian flu has hit the supply chain pretty hard.
Educator and activist Nina Turner got hit with some community notes Sunday when she alleged the AR-15 is a hunting rifle that no one uses for hunting:
The AR-15 is a “hunting” rifle that no hunter uses.
— Nina Turner (@ninaturner) January 22, 2023
Readers added context they thought people might want to know:
New twitter is substantially better than old twitter pic.twitter.com/ywXKpwMGwz

Well, that tweet is completely correct, except that it is one of the MOST popular hunting rifles in the country…
— Libertarian-In-Chief (@ToddHagopian) January 23, 2023
Except for me– I use it for hunting, so I guess I may be "no hunter?" WTH? I do exist, and I do matter.#empoweredlatina
— Mia Anstine (@MiaAnstine) January 23, 2023
False. The AR-15 is a sporting rifle and one of the most common rifles used for hunting in America. #CorrectingNina

Nina, in the spirit of unity I humbly invite you to my ranch to hunt feral hogs, which we do with AR-15’s.
I will warn you, they are known to attack and eat humans, so if you prefer to use a knife I will allow it but only with myself or someone else ready to assist.
— Ross Schumann (@RossSchumann) January 22, 2023
I use one for hunting. It’s a phenomenal caliber for whitetail.
— Eric Reed (@EricReedGRAA) January 23, 2023
Turner’s still on it, though.
If you need an AR-15 to hunt, you’re probably not a great hunter.
— Nina Turner (@ninaturner) January 23, 2023
Here’s some added context from former Playboy White House correspondent Brian J. Karem that no one found helpful:
If you need an AR-15 to hunt, then you're hunting humans.
— Brian J. Karem (@BrianKarem) January 23, 2023
Girl, please.
I think you imagine an AR is some kind of "machine gun". It's just a rifle, which is a very common and traditional weapon for hunting. I take your point, I just think you don't understand the weapon you're talking about.
— Kira (@RealKiraDavis) January 23, 2023
If you don't understand guns, its probably not smart to comment on what guns people "need" when hunting. These 2 rifles shoot the EXACT SAME round a .223. You can take the same round fired in the rifle on the left and fire it in the one on the right. You're demonizing cosmetics. pic.twitter.com/ZCtrhW9DRr
— Chris Manning (@Manning4USCong) January 23, 2023
When people like Nina think they've made a smart point by saying you can't hunt deer with a .223 in some states, it isn't because the round is too powerful, it's because its a round better suited for smaller game. The .223, the round fired in the AR-15, isn't powerful enough.
— Chris Manning (@Manning4USCong) January 23, 2023
Do you hunt? Shoot?
Train with firearms?
What qualifies you to make this statement?
— Maj Toure (@MAJTOURE) January 23, 2023
It's a good thing our natural rights have nothing to do with "needs" or stupid opinions.
— Joecephus (@_joecephus) January 23, 2023
I would LOVE to meet the person who takes their hunting and firearm advice from Nina Turner.
How is this site free??
— Anti-Party Party 🥳 (Hugland) (@AntiPartyParty) January 23, 2023
If you have to restrict guns as a lawmaker, you're probably not a great lawmaker.
— CivilLibertarian11 (@CivilLibertaria) January 23, 2023
Seriously, what do you think an AR-15 is?
— A Growing Pain (@agrowingpain_) January 23, 2023
The AR-15 can be chambered to accept a multitude of calibers, including shotgun. It's light weight, adaptability for different optics and accuracy combined with a reasonable price makes it a great choice for hunting. Stick to things you understand or educate yourself.
— Boomer58 (@TimHuxtable4) January 23, 2023
You can even add the deadly chainsaw bayonet attachment.
