The NBC affiliate in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is taking a rather flimsy poll on universal background checks, asking followers if they support them without offering any idea just what they entail — you only get to say yes or no and that’s it.
When we first peeked in at the results, the votes were overwhelmingly in favor of universal background checks, but since we started this post — and since the poll has gone viral — the numbers have shifted drastically to a near tie at 52 percent for and 48 percent against.
Do you support universal background checks for all firearm purchases?
— NBC DFW (@NBCDFW) September 3, 2019
The thing is, if you went by the comments and not the numbers, you’d swear the public was 99 percent opposed to universal background checks, whatever those might entail.
Universal background checks a prelude to national registration https://t.co/qWwYcM3F3g

We already have the NICS background check system. Unfortunately, the Obama admin purged 500K names and the data is now suspect.
— CrashOverride (@Pcjeffmac) September 3, 2019
You mean a road map for confiscation? No thanks!
— Fireandice (@Insideout54) September 3, 2019
This will definitely stop all criminals send tweet
— The Dank Knight ? (@capeandcowell) September 3, 2019
Nope.
Colorado made UBC's mandatory and banned magazines that hold over 15 rounds six years ago and firearm crime rates have risen, not fallen.— Tom (@BoreGuru) September 3, 2019
We already have the NICS background check system.

Tell everyone how the government would implement those “universal background checks” NBCDFW. Be honest.

Over Labor Day weekend, in Chicago:
– 43 people were shot,
– And 8 people were killed,Did you hear anything from any Mainstream Media outlet?
No.
Why?
It doesn't fit their anti-gun narrative, because Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation.
— ??? (@Godisgood1836) September 3, 2019
Because “universal” background checks will stop all the criminals that buy from a gun dealer since they never buy them on the streets.
— Secret Squirrell (@TheSicilyBiker) September 3, 2019
Yes I’m sure criminals will follow these laws lol
— Kris777 (@KrisOverton) September 3, 2019
Of those that answered this poll do you know what these universal background checks entail? For this check to work there would be a mandatory national gun registry. It is unconstitutional going against the whole intent of the 2nd to protect from tyrannical goverments.
— wotrick (@WOT_Rick) September 3, 2019
Already have them and now ammo purchases go through the DOJ as well
— DoggoPFreely (@DoggoFreely) September 3, 2019
Define "universal background check"? How is that different from the universal background check already employed? Do criminals submit to universal background checks?
— Florida Cracker (@FlaCrackerBoy) September 3, 2019
Can you tell me one mass shooting that would have been prevented by universal background checks?
— Mike Cox (@pstmstr) September 3, 2019
Purchases or transfers? Because the legislation in Congress is "transfers" which includes letting your wife take your pistol to the range.
— PB Firearms (@FirearmsPB) September 3, 2019
We already have background checks. I am assuming you are trying to talk about private sales. The government will never be able to regulate private transactions.
— Brian (@America_Israel1) September 3, 2019
The only people this will apply to are law abiding citizens. Someone who is willing to kill people isn't going to fill out a form first.
Q: How can you even enforce such a thing?
A: You can't.
You will create a new black market and millions of gun smiths.
— Justin Hogan (@Lacimeh) September 3, 2019
The comments don't reflect the polling results. Hmmmmmm.
— Justin Hogan (@Lacimeh) September 3, 2019
Not at first, at least.
What is a “universal background check”?
Who administers a “universal background check”?
What agency is responsible for “universal background check” data storage and entry?
Will unscrupulous characters be able to circumvent a “universal background check”?— Larry Greene (@LarryGreene14) September 3, 2019
How do you expect to enforce one without a national gun registry?
— Mike Belcher (@MikeBelcher14) September 3, 2019
Universal background checks are completely unenforceable. They sound great to useful idiots and nothing more.
— We Savage Few (@WeSavageFew) September 3, 2019
Impossible to enforce without a registry and that is the first step to confiscation.
— Don't Tread On Me (@Mikedaddy1974) September 3, 2019
Only if media creates a registry for all news sources. Destroy your rights before you come for mine.
— Charles McPherson (@charliemc1) September 3, 2019
Note to NBC, criminals don’t follow the rules?
— Tracy ???? (@tracy_texas6) September 3, 2019
Criminals don't do background checks, so this only effects law abiding citizens.
— BT???????????? (@naft82) September 3, 2019
I wish whenever this gets polled, the people doing the polling would actually go into detail on this. How is it going to be enforced? A registry? How about lending firearms? Transfers between family members? It's something that has a nice name, but the details are less desirable.
— Trade Zeke ?? (@EvilRussianBot) September 3, 2019
It would be nice if we were all on the same page regarding “assault weapons” and “universal” background checks.
Depends on what you mean by "universal." As it stands a background check is already required to purchase a firearm from any federally licensed dealer (that's all gun stores, pawn shops, and general stores that sell firearms like walmart).

If you can explain how it would have stopped a single of the "mass shootings" that have occurred.
— The Media are Lying Dem Whores (@CurmudgeonlyOpa) September 3, 2019
This question cannot be answered without details on what UBC entails.
— Anton Zilwicki (@antonzilwicky54) September 3, 2019
Exactly … maybe nail that down at the next Democratic presidential debate?
P.S. Since we started writing this post, the numbers have flipped from 46 for to 54 percent against, and we don’t see that trend changing.
