Groups like Code Pink have been protesting in vagina costumes for years, and who could even count how many pussyhats descended on Washington, D.C., for the inaugural Women’s March?
It’s not a trend we were anxious to see continue, but singer and “Hidden Figures” star Janelle Monáe has now brought us “pussypants” in her new video, which Slate calls “the musician’s latest queer masterpiece.”
You’ve heard of “pussyhats.” Now allow Janelle Monáe to introduce you to “pussypants”: https://t.co/MfkT4D3ZbA pic.twitter.com/oR4biOMYgC

I'm getting mixed signals here. Do we define women by their genitals or not? https://t.co/jKHUExNXY0

I know this makes me a prude, but can we maybe keep clothing as a covering for, and not a distorted depiction of, genitalia? https://t.co/zh6ATr9hnA

Can someone please explain to me what the constant display and obsession with female genitalia has to do women's empowerment? You don't see men walking around dressed up in fake penises and ball sacks… That would be stupid. https://t.co/luFBLWABkn

Again, and I say this with sorrow, Monae is one of the most talented and promising pop singers of a generation, and her 2010 album "The Archandroid" remains a favorite of mine.
She is now plowing her massive potential into the most boring clichés imaginable. https://t.co/1Z9IBxV2KH
