There must be some sort of race to get all of the hottest takes published before the end of the year. Salon is known for its hot takes, but give them an anti-Second Amendment piece co-written by none other than Ed Asner, and you’ve got something so hot it melts right through reality.
Sorry, NRA: The U.S. was actually founded on gun control https://t.co/pPvNCHoHnH
— Salon (@Salon) December 16, 2017
OK, let’s hear him out. He’s essentially relying entirely on a draft of the Second Amendment written by James Madison to prove his case:
Here is Madison’s first draft of the Second Amendment:
“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, a well-armed and well-regulated militia being the best security of a free country; but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person.”
Madison’s intent could not be more obvious: his Second Amendment refers only to state militias. If not, why include that exemption for what we now call “conscientious objectors?”
We’ll be the ones to break it to Asner — there were other founders who made sure that wasn’t the final draft of the Second Amendment. Also, it’s still right there in black-and-white: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Madison wasn’t talking about hunting when he wrote that.
There's stupid, and then there's Salon stupid.
Just wow guys. https://t.co/eXu4u0fise

The "shot heard round the world" was fired during an attempt by the British army to confiscate arms from the colonists but ok… https://t.co/ItDwAKK4b0

Sorry, Salon: the shot heard round the world was the relsut of an attempt at gun confiscation, but nice attempt at revisionist history https://t.co/39FVk2UFS6

That’s why the founders said that everyone should have the right to own and bear firearms. Oh… that’s the opposite of what you said. https://t.co/dzhLFjUPO1

Wow. More like the US was founded to combat gun control. Free people are armed people. https://t.co/fYye3xifHU

Redcoats are still not quite over getting their backsides kicked by private gun owners.
You can tell. https://t.co/5Iycbc3wSt

There’s re-writing history and then there’s this absurd ahistorical easily debunked nonsense from Salon. Not even Stalin would have the audacity. https://t.co/oQTU2MvrDR

Umm, no, the US was founded on the 2nd Amendment, the right to bear arms. https://t.co/r8uG0MwwO2

This is the worst article i've ever read on this subject.
“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" was still part of Madison's first draft.
This article is too stupid for me even to bother a proper fisking. https://t.co/vv7gL07nzT
