Suspect arraigned in murder of Muslim teen leaving mosque; Not a hate crime, but road rage, say police

The murder of a Muslim teen over the weekend had many suspecting a hate crime and blaming President Trump’s rhetoric, but police on Monday said it was road road that drove the 22-year-old suspect to kill 16-year-old Nabra Hassanen of Reston, Va., with a metal baseball bat and attempt to hide her remains in a pond.

There no question that Hassanen’s killing was horrific and meaningless, but police have named the suspect, and he doesn’t appear to be your typical white supremacist or Trump supporter. Police say suspect Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, wasn’t driven by Islamophobia, either, but by road rage.

Fairfax County Police posted the following to their website Monday:

A man has been charged with murdering a 17-year-old Reston girl who was reported missing today, Sunday, June 18, around 4 a.m. near Dranesville Road and Woodson Road, in the Herndon area. An investigation determined she was walking outside with a group of friends when they got into a dispute with a man in a car. It appears the suspect, Darwin A. Martinez Torres, 22, of Sterling, got out of his car and assaulted the victim. Her friends could not find her and police were called to help.

Have you noticed how “anti-racism strategists” go out of their way to blame white supremacy before the facts are in?

The “road rage” narrative isn’t sitting well with everyone.

Update:

Stephanie Ramirez of WUSA9 is reporting that ICE has confirmed that it lodged a detainer Monday for Torres.
