Reuters is reporting that the French national who reportedly yelled “Allahu akbar” as he fatally stabbed a 21-year-old woman in front of a crowd at a backpackers’ hostel in Australia showed “absolutely no indication of any form of radicalisation or any political motive,” according to police.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung died following the attack, and a 30-year-old British man remains in critical condition.

Queensland police told reporters that the 29-year-old attacker, who has not been identified, was in Australia on a valid tourist visa and had consumed cannabis before carrying out the attack.

A TV news report suggests that the attacker might have had a romantic obsession with the victim.
