Lawyer for man who planned to pipe bomb SOTU address says 'very fragile' client has evolved

Donald Trump’s self-inflicted gunshot injury to the foot, sustained during an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, continues to dominate the headlines two days after the network released choice excerpts. That’s a shame, because while the story of a Muslim patriot should be told, there is some news about Islamic extremism that deserves some attention as well.

On Monday, a man who plotted to pipe bomb the Capitol building during President Obama’s 2015 State of the Union Address and then shoot survivors as they fled pleaded guilty to federal charges including attempted murder of U.S. officials and employees, offering material support to a foreign terrorist organization, and a firearms-related charge.

The Associated Press reports that Christopher Lee Cornell, 22, was arrested in January 2015 by FBI agents in the parking lot of a gun shop outside Cincinnati, Ohio, where he had just purchased two M-15 semi-automatic rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition. His defense attorney said Monday that a “very fragile” Cornell had matured significantly since his arrest, dropped his adopted name of Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah, and trimmed his beard.

Cornell, who still lived with his parents at the time of his arrest, told WXIX-TV in an interview from jail last year, “We’re here in Ohio. We’re in every state. We’re more organized than you think.”
