U.N. brokered talks intended to end the civil war in Syria and expected to last six months made it two days before the U.N. special envoy for Syria called for a three-week “temporary pause.”

U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura insists the talks are not a failure; the sides are just having a “time out” until they can learn to behave. A three-week break should be just the thing to get talks back on track.
