Candidate Bernie Sanders certainly doesn’t speak for everyone when he says he’s “sick and tired” of hearing about Hillary Clinton’s damn emails. That’s too bad for him, but it could be worse: He could still be hearing from the “Popeye’s Truthers” who doubt not only that candidate Ben Carson dodged sniper fire was witness to a hold-up, as he claimed in a radio interview, but that he’s ever been inside a Popeye’s franchise.

The Baltimore Police Department quickly tweeted that it couldn’t locate any record of such an incident, clarifying that it had been overwhelmed by media requests but needed more information to go on than, “Were any Popeye’s restaurants in Baltimore robbed in the early ’80s and was a Ben Carson present?”

Today, the police repeated that they have no way of proving or disproving the story.

It’s not that they haven’t been looking into it: Luke Broadwater reports that police “released a 24-page letter to the media documenting their efforts to find the report, which included searches of four databases.” He adds:

TJ Smith, a spokesman for the police department, said the police department is not trying to debunk Carson’s statement. It’s merely responding to media requests.

“We’re not saying it did or didn’t happen,” Smith said. “We can’t find a report based on the information we’ve gathered. It absolutely could have happened. We just don’t have the information to get that report.”

The police have their story and they’re sticking to it. Has anyone contacted the people at Popeye’s?
