A shooting on campus today forced the lockdown of Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss., left one professor at the university dead and another on the run.

Schmidt, who went by the handle @DocJayhawk on Twitter, described himself as “Historian, Professor, Dad, Husband, KU Fan and transplanted Kansan!” Sadly, what appears to be his final tweet shows him and likely his son taking in a football game.

The incident was classified as a hostage situation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The school informed students and faculty of the situation through a series of Twitter posts.

In a press release, Delta State said that “law enforcement is actively pursing every lead to apprehend the person of interest, Shannon Lamb, an employee of the university.” Police believe that Lamb is the culprit behind another fatal shooting in Gautier, Miss.
