Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was formally sentenced to death today by a judge, following a decision by a federal jury in May to have him executed. There was a bit of excitement beforehand, as authorities detained a man with a meat cleaver outside the courthouse.
Aside from meat cleaver man, a handful of Tsarnaev’s victims were on hand to hear the judge formally hand down Tsarnaev’s death sentence, some of whom said they had suffered hearing loss, amputations and PTSD as a result of the bombing.
U.S. Attorney Carmen Oritz was unmoved by Tsarnaev’s apology, noting that nowhere in his remarks did he renounce violent extremism.
