Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed at a briefing this afternoon what many had been saying throughout the day: the Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia last night, killing at least seven people, was traveling around 106 miles per hour as it approached a relatively sharp curve with a 50 mile per hour speed limit.

Investigators also said that the engineer had applied the emergency brake while approaching the turn, managing to slow the train to around 102 miles per hour.

Reporters were assured the investigation is ongoing.
