Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne announced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon that white Madison police officer Matt Kenny would not face charges in the March shooting death of Tony Robinson Jr., a biracial 19-year-old.

Officer Kenny was reportedly responding to several 911 calls alleging that Robinson was “acting kind of crazy,” assaulting people and jumping in front of cars and blocking traffic, although it was believed he was unarmed. Callers said that Robinson had taken mushrooms or some other drug and was “tweaking.”

In advance of the press conference, WISC-TV investigative reporter Adam Schrager tweeted that threats to shoot police officers and to riot depending upon the district attorney’s decision had been received by Madison police.

The DA closed the press conference by referring to recent violence in the country and by quoting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The group Young, Gifted and Black said that this was the outcome they were expecting.

In the meantime, people on the street outside the press conference remained calm if disappointed.
