Vice President Joe Biden didn’t have to wander more than a few steps outside his front door today in order to make one of his famous gaffes, quickly dismissed by American media as a harmless joke while others treated it as a bigoted remark and an international incident.

Greeting Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny and his wife Fionnuala, Biden joked for some reason that “if you’re wearing orange, you’re not welcome in here” — presumably unaware or unconcerned that the color orange is traditionally associated with Irish Protestants.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that Member of Parliament William McCrea called on Biden to apologize and “take corrective action to prove in a practical way that people who are from a Protestant background are welcome in the White House.” He added, “Undoubtedly if he had made such a remark about any other faith group there would be calls for his resignation.”
