Several commuters were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station in Washington, D.C. filled with heavy smoke.

Update:

Amanda Carpenter, communications director for Sen. Ted Cruz, is among those wondering why, as reported in the Washington Post, “No cause of the smoke has been determined.” An FBI spokesman told the newspaper, “At this point it doesn’t appear to be anything other than a fire.” An electrical malfunction? Workers haven’t confirmed that theory.
