It was unclear Saturday night at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, N.J., whether people were hearing gunshots or the noise from a burning car.
In either case, the mall was placed on lockdown.
It’s sounding less and less like an active shooter situation.

Paramus Mayor Richard LaBarbiera said a car fire reported around 8 p.m. near Macy’s caused the sounds initially reported to be gunshots. The windshield, tires or airbag popping likely prompted the calls of a shooting, he said.
“It appears there was some confusion with the car fire,” LaBarbiera said after responding to the shopping center.
