In February, Twitchy shared the story of 15-year-old Justina Pelletier and the #FreeJustina hashtag campaign. The New York Daily News reported at the time:
Doctors at Tufts Medical Center claim Justina is suffering from mitochondrial disorder, a genetic disorder that affects how cells produce energy. But when her regular doctor was unavailable, Justina was brought to Boston Children’s Hospital, where doctors decided that her symptoms were psychosomatic—meaning, they were the result of a mental illness.
Boston Children’s Hospital reported the Pelletiers to Massachusetts’ Department of Children and Families for over-medicating Justina. The state assumed custody of the child.
News has spread quickly today that a Massachusetts judge has granted the state agency “permanent” custody of Justina where there previously had been only temporary custody. The Blaze reports, however, that the state will retain custody of Justina until May 25, when another hearing will be held to determine custody going forward. In either case, the Pelletier family for now have lost their bid for custody of their daughter.
