An email blast to reporters this afternoon claims that Sen. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) has successfully enrolled in an insurance plan through the state’s online exchange, in the process turning down a federal government subsidy.

In a statement, Begich, who faces a competitive race next year, said he wants to have “the exact same experience and go through the same steps as other Alaskans when it comes to signing up for health care, which is why I have decided to refuse any federal subsidy and have signed up on Alaska’s federally run marketplace.”

Roll Call’s Lesniewski cites a memo reminding congressmen that “if you do not elect via DC health link, you will not have Senate employer-sponsored coverage in 2014.”
