Twitchy told you how Texas Sen. Ted Cruz won over the crowd Friday morning at the 2013 Values Voter Summit by easily shutting down multiple hecklers without missing a beat. Cruz’s message obviously resonated with summit-goers, as he handily won the 2016 presidential straw poll, walking away with 42 percent of the vote, a full 29 points ahead of the second-place finisher.

Ted Cruz wins the presidential straw poll at #VVS13 by taking 42% of vote. The next candidate down, Ben Carson, took only 13%.

Dr. Ben Carson followed in a distant second, with Sens. Rick Santorum, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio rounding out the top 5. Sharing last place with Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback was Hillary Clinton, with one vote apiece.
Cruz recently explained to CNN’s Candy Crowley that nasty, partisan rhetoric from the Left is a sign that conservatives are winning the argument on substance; it’s very possible, then, that the hecklers won him a few votes — not that he needed the help.
