The death today of the 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson at the hands of his mother’s boyfriend has shocked the country. MSNBC contributor Goldie Taylor was inspired to share the story of her own abuse as a child, also at the hands of the mother’s boyfriend. Taylor, who wrote about giving up her gun just days after the Newtown massacre, recalls how her own mother came to her defense with a firearm and shot the boyfriend, confessing that she “very well might have done the same.”
It’s not hard to imagine that many readers might have done the same if it would have saved Adrian Peterson’s child. As Dana Loesch noted recently, firearms are a feminist tool; what’s truly ugly are the circumstances that call for them to be used in self-defense.
