Amid sea of abortion rights protesters, Texas House and Senate recess until July 9

Reconvened today for a special session called by Gov. Rick Perry, the Texas House and Senate gaveled in, briefly discussed timekeeping measures and then called for a recess until July 9, after the Independence Day holiday. Nothing much happened, but there was plenty of interest, as abortion advocates in orange shirts lined up to protest proposed limits on abortion after 20 weeks and stricter safety standards for abortion clinics.

The action today was outside the capitol, where state Sen. Wendy Davis addressed thousands before the senate convened.

It would be difficult to argue that the pro-abortion crowd wasn’t an “unruly mob” — last week protesters shut down proceedings by screaming from the gallery and used social media to debate the legal consequences of rushing the floor. One protester was reportedly arrested after punching a state trooper who was clearing the gallery.

Although the House will not meet again this week, Rep. Byron Cook said a committee would convene tomorrow to hear testimony on the fetal pain bill from late afternoon until midnight — a deadline which abortion activists see as inadequate.
