We can’t be the only ones who cringe whenever companies send out press releases saying they hope customers are “as excited about the future” as they are. Those words almost invariably mean change is coming, and a popular product or service is going away.
Today, Twitter announced that it is stopping development of the TweetDeck apps for AIR, Android and iPhone to focus on the web versions of the popular Twitter client.
"Doubling down on TweetDeck web ex and discontinuing our app support is a reflection of where our TweetDeck power-users are going." Uh no.
— Matt Ortega (@MattOrtega) March 5, 2013
So, are users as “excited about what the future holds” as the TweetDeck team claims to be?
I have an ancient version of Tweetdeck Air. I knew that once Twitter bought Tweetdeck, they'd kill it. Ugh.

Wait…Tweetdeck died? But I'm on Tweetdeck right now.

I can't even think about this news that Twitter is killing tweetdeck for desktop. I love Tweetdeck.

I wouldn't mind so much about Tweetdeck for AIR being discontinued if the Chrome app actually worked.

Twitter has to be the most self-destructive tech company to exist in decades.http://t.co/Tc966qxt7X

It's a shame Twitter decided to kill off Tweetdeck for iOS app. Another twitter client bites the dust.

Dammit @twitter don't kill off tweetdeck it's infinitely important to the work I do #notchill

Deep down in my black coal subversive heart, I hope this inspires someone to create a *true* Tweetdeck clone. (I do miss the font.)
— kady o'malley (@kady) March 5, 2013
They'll pry my #TweetDeck v0.37.6 from my cold, dead hands
— Micah White (@micahwhite) March 5, 2013
So the web app is exactly the same as Tweetdeck AIR but it'll clog our browsers and make access more difficult? Gee, thanks @tweetdeck !

In all seriousness, I would pay money for @Tweetdeck if they could keep supporting the platform of my choice.
— Kevin McGuire (@KevinOnCFB) March 5, 2013
So Twitter is truly killing Tweetdeck. I'd pay real money for a desktop app that manages Twitter & FB. Surely I'm not alone on this?
— Ariane (@shonias) March 5, 2013
Why would they come out with a @TweetDeck update adding some really useful column filters and just… TAKE IT ALL AWAY? WHY?! #givemeamoment
— John Bowman (@johnbowman) March 5, 2013
@tweetdeck Congratulations! You have succeeded in driving me away from Tweetdeck entirely. Browser page is not what I want. Bye!
— Andi Mann (@AndiMann) March 5, 2013
Someone hold us and tell us everything is going to be all right.

Wow, https://t.co/5xBTYeqlkP is really nice. I don't think I'll miss Air-based Tweetdeck at all.

Gawd. You "Internet people" are so resistant to change. Embrace Blue TweetDeck. It's really not that bad.
— Brian ? Ries (@moneyries) March 5, 2013
As a departing gift, might Twitter offer the source code? Probably not, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. #SaveTweetdeck, anyone?
The least @twitter @support could do is release Tweetdeck to the open source community so they #SaveTweetdeck
