This is why Catholics can’t have nice things. A while back, magician, libertarian and atheist Penn Jillette had offered what he calls Chiquita Banana Wednesday as an atheist alternative to Ash Wednesday, signified by the wearing of a sticker on the forehead in place of ashes. The “tradition” has since moved to Twitter and inspired the hashtag #ChiquitaBananaWednesday.

Um, how much planning did you need?
Thanks to all the people tweeting pictures of themselves from Chicquita Banana Wednesday. Everyday IS an Atheist Holiday!

Enjoying Chiquita Banana Wednesday. Not the right brand but surely the right groove. Off to the dentist. Oh boy. pic.twitter.com/Lo6sOks9

It’s an unorthodox tradition in more ways than one; neither Penn nor his followers could seem to track down actual Chiquita stickers.

@pennjillette your books mean a lot to me, and helped me realize I'm an atheist. Happy #chiquitabananawednesday pic.twitter.com/JBRKZB6s

My favorite holiday, aside from festivus, is #ChiquitaBananaWednesday @pennjillette
