KSTU Fox 13 is reporting tonight that an 11-year-old school student brought a gun to West Kearns Elementary School today “for self protection and for the protection of other students” after hearing about the massacre in Newtown, Conn., on Friday.

The child, a sixth-grader, reportedly told school officials that his parents encouraged him to bring the weapon.
