Comedy legend Jerry Lewis found himself in hot water today after remarking that he does not appreciate female comedians:
Asked Thursday if he had changed his mind at all because of performers like Melissa McCarthy and Sarah Silverman, the 87-year-old Lewis said of women performing broad comedy: “I can’t see women doing that. It bothers me.”
“I cannot sit and watch a lady diminish her qualities to the lowest common denominator,” he said. “I just can’t do that.”
Okay, so actually he said that he thinks his own profession is beneath a woman’s dignity, but never mind that.
Such sexism, as we know, is best responded to using crude and anatomically impossible vulgarities.
Roseanne Barr in particular was all over it, and we still don’t know whether she was bashing Lewis or roasting him (or both).
We’re still trying to figure out why these comediennes think that cursing like sailors “elevates” women, but to each her own.
