It was very understandably overshadowed in the news by an act of domestic terrorism that left four Marines dead, but President Obama’s visit to the El Reno Federal Correctional Institution in Oklahoma earlier in the day was historic, being the first time a sitting president had visited a prison.
Reporter and Obama superfan April Ryan retweeted some photos of the president’s tour of the facility.
The photos don’t show it, but the president did reportedly meet personally with six inmates, just days after writing letters to 46 nonviolent drug offenders whose sentences he commuted earlier in the week.
The president, who has dedicated much of this week to demanding that Congress pursue criminal justice reform, had a personal message for the inmates.
Serious question: Did President Obama tell inmates to stop raping each other, or was that message exclusively for the audience at the NAACP convention?
