Despite a reminder from New York City Police Commissioner Bill Bratton that Sunday’s funeral for slain police officer Wenjian Liu was about grieving and not grievances, cops again turned their backs to Mayor Bill de Blasio. With the relationship between the mayor and police remaining so tense, de Blasio appeared before the press Monday afternoon alongside Bratton to praise New York’s police and cite statistics that show a dramatic drop in crime in the city.

Pretty much, but dial back the enthusiasm quite a bit.

Mayor de Blasio seems to have nothing but respect for the police department today. Despite the turning of backs to the mayor at Liu’s funeral, de Blasio used his own Twitter account to praise the “good people” who keep us safe, to mixed reaction.

Has the mayor managed to smooth things over with the police and the public?
