Earlier today, Rolling Stone’s editors claimed their decision to put a Tiger Beat-esque Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on the cover was born out of a desire to adhere to the “traditions of journalism.” The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple insisted that citizens upset by the sympathetic depiction of Tsarnaev were merely part of America’s “tedious outrage machine.”
Now it’s Amanda Marcotte’s turn to address Rolling Stone’s critics — in her signature vicious style, natch:
http://t.co/Wi9WWxtHhd I strongly disagree with the censoring of the Rolling Stone cover, and this is exactly why.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
@johnknefel @janetreitman Basically, I think people are being children who want to preserve the myth that the monster is always ugly.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
Don’t want to see a terrorist glorified on the cover of a pop culture magazine? Clearly you’re just a child. You’re not mature like Amanda:
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev *is* handsome. I fail to see what value there is in pretending otherwise. The bad guy isn't always a cartoon.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
Gross. She’s utterly delusional.
@ryanjweber Yes, and it's babyish to decide because of his crimes, we have to pretend he looks differently than he does.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
If you can't handle the basic message "sometimes the bad guy comes in an attractive package", you are too dumb to leave the house, honestly.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
I mean, "Don't judge a book by its cover" is a lesson we learn in kindergarten, people. Kindergarten.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
@ryanjweber The only reason showing a picture is called "idolizing" is because of his looks, duh.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
@ryanjweber Of course, anyone who says that is a stone cold idiot. The point is the tension between his face and his soul.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
@ryanjweber Yeah, you'd have to be a stone cold idiot who can't work a keyboard to believe that, so just a rationalization.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
I love all the people pretending not to know that Rolling Stone does political and crime coverage, to rationalize their knee-jerk reaction.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
Here's what I think it going on with people coming up with "reasons" the RS cover is "bad". http://t.co/2OurvSBUg0
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
Get it, you rubes? Discomfort with idolization of a terrorist is proof of your prejudices!
@EmilyFrancesSD What's the message that you think it "sends"? Hey kids, blow up marathons? No, that's asinine. We are smarter than that.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
@AnnaHolmes I knew it would come to a head on some level the day they first released his picture. People need their villains ugly.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
@Mcolette Clearly, because many haven't learned the lesson not to judge a book by its cover and need teaching.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
People who say the RS cover "sends a bad message". Really? You think "don't judge a book by its cover" is a BAD message?
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
I can't tell if the critics of the Rolling Stone cover are really this stupid or just being disingenous. Probably a mix.
— Amanda Marcotte (@AmandaMarcotte) July 17, 2013
Pure, unadulterated depravity. These are the ravings of a woman whose heart is black and full of hate.
. @AmandaMarcotte Amanda you really gotta call people stupid? What the hell?
— e (@brassiest) July 17, 2013
Good grief, and now Amanda Marcotte is telling people who don’t like the Rolling Stone cover are “stupid”. What the ACTUAL FUCK.
— Emily Aviva K-M (@EmilyAviva) July 17, 2013
Martin Richard was a handsome boy. You're a piece of shit. "@AmandaMarcotte: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev *is* handsome"
— Sean Agnew (@seanagnew) July 17, 2013
@AmandaMarcotte I can't tell if ppl with zero empathy for those hurt by the choice of image are sociopaths or media hacks. Probably a mix.
— Brian D Halligan (@BrianDHalligan) July 17, 2013
Shame on her.
