'Pure evil': Va. Democratic gubernatorial hopeful's campaign strategy is 'a new low'

Virginia Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is hoping to succeed Terry McAuliffe and become the state’s next governor. In order to make that happen, he’ll have to start by defeating opponent Tom Perriello in the Democratic primary.

Apparently one of his strategies is brandishing his pro-choice cred:

More from the Wall Street Journal:

Mr. Northam, 57, a pediatric neurologist from Norfolk, Va., is a veteran of the first Iraq war and speaks with the southern drawl of his native Nassawadox, on the state’s Eastern Shore.

Mr. Northam, too, has broken with the party line: He voted twice for George W. Bush for president, toyed with joining with Virginia state Senate Republicans in 2009 and, during his 2013 campaign for lieutenant governor, declared that “I don’t consider myself a liberal.”

To emphasize his support from abortion-rights activists—and Mr. Perriello’s record on the issue—Mr. Northam’s recent campaign schedule has taken him on a tour of the state’s abortion clinics. Last week, Mr. Northam stopped at an Alexandria clinic, where he spoke to a dozen supporters about his efforts to block antiabortion legislation during his tenure in the Virginia Senate.
